Week 2 Weigh In

So as of yesterday (my weigh-in day) I’m up 3 pounds since last week’s weigh in. I was up 6 pounds on Monday morning, so I guess that’s the bright part of this weigh in.

No more free passes on “fun weekends.” Luckily (although not really since I love to travel), we don’t have any upcoming weddings/weekend getaways.

Absence Makes the Scale Grow…er, Meaner?

As you may have (or more likely, may not have) noticed. I’ve been gone. On Friday M and I woke up at 4:30 a.m. to get to the airport for our 6:40 a.m. flight. M is not a morning person at all so he was not too happy with my decision to book that early flight. I booked it that early though for the sole purpose of getting to Texas in time to enjoy the full day. We were going to Texas for my friend’s wedding reception which was at a lake house/resort, so there ideally was plenty to do on Friday.

Our original itinerary looked like this:

(As an aside I find it incredibly interesting that IND-DTW and DTW-AUS are on nearly the same line.) The red and blue are the two different flights we were supposed to take. The black is the drive from Austin to the lakehouse.

Unfortunately, after a half hour or so at our gate, they announced a delay on our flight. Then a few minutes later, they announced our flight was cancelled.

To say we weren’t happy was an understatement. We proceeded to find out we were rescheduled to get to Austin at 11:37 p.m. That was not going to work for me. So I called an agent and this is what we ended up doing instead:

Yep, four flights. And into San Antonio and a longer drive. And a new rental car reservation.

Things could have gone wrong. Taking four flights was very risky, but we arrived in San Antonio at 4:45 p.m. We made it to the lakehouse by 7 p.m. Not exactly what we had planned, but I was glad we got to Texas at all after the day we had.

I learned something on this trip about my weightloss journey though: I have no self control when I’m traveling. I ate very badly on the trip, particularly in the airport. I am hopeful that my weight update tomorrow won’t be a gain, but I’m making no promises at this point.

Week 1 Weigh In

A little recent history: Before we got engaged, M and I both tried the diet associated with the 4 Hour Body Project. It’s basically a low carb diet with the addition of beans. Because I hate beans, this was obviously not a good idea. This diet also involves a pure binge day. Needless to say, I never lost any weight that stuck past the binge day.

When we went to Nashville (the weekend we got engaged), I can’t remember what specific diet if any we were on.

M and I decided the day after we got engaged that we were both going to try to lose some weight prior to the wedding. M even decided we should take a last trip to Dairy Queen to splurge one last time. The odd part of that was we weren’t regular DQ customers before that, but oh well, it was symbolic nonetheless. I joined Weight Watchers within a few days, or even that night.

Weight Watchers was okay but I think I was eating too few calories (like below 1200). I also never really kept it together on the weekends on WW. I dropped some weight but would gain it all back every weekend – this is the big reason I’m giving up drinking for the most part.

I’ve only had real success in weight loss twice. The first time I did Atkins in Summer 2004. I was at my heighest weight ever when I started that and I probably lost 60 pounds.  The second success was from November 2008 to March 2009 when I lost about 30 pounds. The second time my success came from counting calories.

Atkins was obviously out, so I decided to count calories again. I like counting calories because I can eat whatever I want – it just has to be within my calorie range. And I have no excuses. The only real difficulty with it is restaurants that don’t have caloric information available. Thankfully companies are providing this information more and more.

I’ve walked around today very proud, because I have lost 6.5 pounds since last Wednesday! Calorie counting and working out are clearly doing something for me. I know I won’t have this high of numbers every week, but I’ll take it this week! And I’ll use it to motivate me next week and the week after. There’s nothing stopping me this time. And there won’t be more to my weight loss roller coaster. This is the last time I’m going to need to lose weight (absent pregnancy weight).

T-167 – T-165

I’d love to think that I’m going to post every day, but that’s just not realistic for me. As an example, here was my day today:

  • 6:10 wake up
  • 6:30 cardio core class at gym
  • 7:35 get ready
  • 8:00 commute
  • 8:20 Kohls (needed something for our trip this weekend)
  • 9:00 Attorney meeting at Bob Evans
  • 10:30 – 3:30 work (non-stop today, which is a new development that I’m really loving but also simultaneously stressing out about)
  • 3:30 drive downtown
  • 4:00 CLE downtown
  • 5:15 drive across downtown
  • 5:30 IndyTalks event with M
  • 8:00 get home and relax for first time all day
Luckily this isn’t my every day, but it’s becoming more common for me to have these days often. It makes me very happy that I got to the gym this morning and therefore had no excuse to not work out. Yesterday, I did not make it to the gym in the morning and subsequently only went to the gym with M for 30 minutes last night. I’m really aiming for 60 minutes of cardio most days and M doesn’t want to go the gym for that long so if I don’t go by myself and/or in the morning I won’t get 60 minutes in. I really value our time together so I didn’t want to spend time at the gym that I could be spending with him instead.
Anyway, things are going well still. I didn’t get as much gym time in this weekend as I would have liked but my weight is continuing to creep down. I think tomorrow’s weigh in will bring very good news.
  • Calories:
    • Sunday: 1,325
    • Monday: 1,260 (give or take some calories for a cupcake that I could only estimate – and this by the way is the reason I love calorie counting because I can choose to eat whatever I want as long as I stay in my calorie zone)
    • Tuesday: 1,377
  • Workouts
    • Sunday: nadda
    • Monday: 31 minute run (3 miles) – did 3×400 speedwork in the middle
    • Tuesday: cardio core class

T-168, or Paper Flowers = Paper Cuts

Yesterday, I spent at least 5 hours working on paper flowers for the wedding. I know this isn’t the most conventional thing but I really like them. M was very skeptical after I made some a while ago (after seeing them on one of Mary’s blog) but this time around I did them with better paper and a bit more flair.

This is my first attempt at a centerpiece:

M’s opinion has vastly changed now that he’s seen a more complete centerpiece. He’s even help fold some petals 🙂

Randomly while I was at Michael’s, which I’ve been to three times this weekend, I saw a lady carrying The Big Book of Exercise. I saw someone comment on this book on a blog this past week, so I asked the lady if she had bought it at the Michael’s. I thought it was strange for Michael’s to sell such a thing, and there was a bookstore next door. But nope she said they did have the book, so I went back and found it. I did one of the beginner weight lifting things at the gym, which I really liked.

M and I met his family to see a show at Beef and Boards (dinner + local theater, essentially). Dinner was a buffet. I didn’t do the greatest, but I didn’t go completely overboard. I’m also continuing to do well on no drinking even though we still have miller lites in the fridge.

Daily Statistics

  • Exercise:
    • 20 minutes of weight lifting
  • Food:
    • Breakfast: Special K chocolate cereal and milk
    • Lunch: 3 hard tacos from Taco Bell (510 calories)
    • Dinner: roast beef, small sides of mashed potato and mac and cheese, salad, and split chocolate flourless cake with M
    • Total Calories: 1765 (with dinner at 1,000 – which is an estimate)

T-169, or We Have Bridesmaids’ Dresses

After work last night afternoon (my boss has an awesome tendency to tell us to go home early on Friday), I stopped at the grocery store to pick up the makings for this recipe.  Two hours later, M and I were eating a delicious dinner. Definitely check this recipe out if you want a quick, easy, delicious crockpot dinner.

M then went to softball, and I met my parents and sister at David’s Bridal to have my sister try on a new bridesmaids’ dress I found last week with my BFF MOH. (I have two MOH – my sister, the maid of honor, and my best friend from college, Ashlee, the matron of honor). The week after we got engaged, my mom, M’s mom, sis MOH, BFF MOH,and ex-co-worker BM (she needs a shorter nickname) went dress shopping. We originally picked this dress out for the BMs:

We were going to do it in wine color (which is not the color shown).

I really liked this dress, but it’s a bit plain and I wasn’t sold on the color because I really want my shoes to match the BM dresses and I could not find wine colored shoes. So BFF MOH and I went last week again to look at colors primarily, but we ended up not only changing colors but dresses.

We liked two dresses:

My sister tried both on and while both looked good, we decided that with the weather being a crap shoot in late October, dress number two was the winner. The color is actually the same as the one above. I love it! And I’m very happy with the color change.

After dress shopping, I went to dinner with my family. I had a few peanuts and more than a few diet cokes, but managed to avoid the delicious bread and everything else that I could have eaten. My willpower has been very good so far and I hope to keep it up. The challenge will come today when I have a buffet dinner! UGH!


Daily Statistics

  • Exercise:
    • Ran 31 minutes (2.5 miles) with my neighbor
    • Ran 28 minutes (2.5 miles) on the treadmill after the run with the neighbor
  • Food:
    • Breakfast: Bagel Thin Asparagus Mushroom Egg Sandwich from Einstein’s.
    • Lunch: Marie Callender’s Three Cheese Tortellini and yogurt
    • Dinner: buffalo chicken on slimwich (90 calorie bun) with 2% pepperjack cheese and  green beans, later – another ice cream cone from McD’s
    • Total Calories: 1344 + some peanuts (probably 10 – 15 peanuts total)

T-170 or The Elliptical Stages

I started my second morning out with a trip to the gym for an hour of cardio. I started with what I wanted to be an attempt at one speedy mile on the treadmill. I warmed up for 6 minutes at 5 mph and then bumped it up to 7.5 mph to test my mile speed. After a .5 miles at or above 7.5 I couldn’t go any farther. I think I’m going to start giving myself a mile test every couple of weeks just to check out my speed.

After my 12 whole minutes on the treadmill, I headed on to the elliptical. I have had a rollercoaster relationship with the elliptical. Before I could run, I loved it. After I started running, I stopped using the elliptical because I thought “Why not use the treadmill if I’m in the gym?” (Obviously I had not fully learned to appreciate cross training yet). After that stage, I started training for triathlons, which meant that if I was “cross” training I was biking or swimming, not using the elliptical. The most recent stage was sadly the “I’m lucky if I get enough runs in let alone any cross training” stage. I’m proud to say that as of this week I’m back in the using the elliptical as much or probably more than the treadmill stage. Since I only plan to run 3 times a week for half marathon training, I’ll need a good place to log my cross training days. I’ll probably bike some but the elliptical is the best place for me to get long cardio time in because I like to do that before work and because I’ve discovered something awesome about the elliptical:


So today, I read and used the elliptical for 48 minutes. My latest read is The Imperfectionists which is interesting. I’m over a quarter of the way through the book and I think we are our 4th or 5th narrator – and by and large these narrators are not in the same place, time, or storyline. I’m sure it will all tie together at some point.

So overall, a good workout this a.m. My eats were right on track today.

  • Exercise:
    • Ran 12 minutes (1.1 miles)
    • Elliptical 48 minutes (4.6 miles) with some hill/interval training and one long uphill/downhill at the end.
  • Food:
    • Breakfast: Speak K Chocolate Delight + Milk
    • Lunch: Jimmy John’s #4 no sprouts
    • Dinner: Chicken Carbonara lean cuisine, broiled cauliflower, ice cream cone from McD’s (just 150 calories!)
    • Total Calories: 1427
    • I know it does not look like I’m on a diet with today’s eats, but what makes counting calories great is that I just have to stick to the goal, which is precisely what I did here today.
